Dialectical
Behavior Therapy
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based therapeutic approach initially developed for individuals who are suicidal, self-harming, or have personality disorders. Over time, its application has expanded to treat various mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, grief, and relationship difficulties.
The term "dialectical" refers to the idea that two seemingly opposite truths can coexist. For example, we can be doing our best while also striving to improve; we can disagree yet still understand another perspective; something can make logical sense and simultaneously be emotionally overwhelming. This "yes, and" mindset is central to how problems are understood and addressed in DBT.
Foundational Concepts of Dialectical Behavior Therapy:
Mindfulness: Practices designed to increase awareness of emotions, thoughts, and behavioral patterns.
Distress Tolerance: Skills aimed at reducing the intensity of overwhelming emotions when they feel "too big" or uncontrollable.
Emotion Regulation: Techniques to manage emotions when they are at a level that can be processed effectively.
Interpersonal Effectiveness: Strategies for clear communication, setting boundaries, and meeting relational needs successfully.
Dialectical principles are fundamental to my therapeutic approach. I incorporate specific DBT interventions tailored to each client’s needs. DBT is especially effective when working with highly sensitive individuals or as preparation for trauma therapy, where intense, suppressed emotions often emerge.
